Keeping the Lights on in a Low-Carbon World

The demand for electricity has always varied with season and time of day.  However, there is growing concern that we will not be able to ‘keep the lights on’ when we move to a low- carbon world because of the increasing use of renewable energy which is intermittent in nature, such as wind or solar.  Current Government policies to tackle this issue and their failure to get to the heart of the problem will be discussed.  We are living in the 21st century and many other countries are also facing and solving the same problems.  The solutions include:

* greater energy efficiency
* smarter 2-way communication between energy suppliers and customers
* the use of international grid interconnectors
* ways of shifting electricity use away from peak demand periods
* electricity storage
